Cosima Wagner's great collection of note-books provides the most important insight into the character and work of one of the greatest creative geniuses of all time. This second volume of diaries voers the years from 1878-1883, from the years in which Wagner first started work on his last great musical work, Parsifal, to the year of his death. parsifal stands at the centre of this second volume of Cosima Wagner's diaries and the insight provided in these pages into the composition of the opera is particularly fascinating. In Parsifal Wagner returned to the Grail Legend which had obsessed him from his youth, and which he saw as an allegory of his own quest for self-fulfiment. In this book we read the day-to-day account of a genius in growing physical decline who nonetheless, in sprite of deepening melancholy, continued to prove capable of incredible resilience, courage and energy - at times of an almost superhuman nature. Barely six months from his death, in the midst of physical sickness, he took up the baton in the course of a performance of the Third Act of Parsifal and conducted the opera to the end. He died in the arms of Cosima Wagner on 13th Fwbruary 1883 in Venice. Mr. Skelton has concluded this work with a postscript of his own in which he describes the lives of Cosima Wagner and her children after Wagner's death. The day before her husband died, Cosima closed her diaries for ever. Her task of providing her children with a full account of the life and character of Richard Wagner was accomplished.
