From Library Journal:
In these two books, Robertiello and Rodman discuss how they became psychotherapists, the process of psychotherapy (illustrated with many case stories), and various movements and trends in psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and psychotherapy. Rodman practices a more traditional, Freudian-based psychoanalysis, relying heavily on the concept of transference. He has read, studied, and thought widely on psychoanalysis, however, and maintains a flexible and humane approach to helping "keep his patients' hopes alive." His finely-written book is fourth in the distinguished series that included John Gardner's On Becoming A Novelist ( LJ 4/15/83). Robertiello, who has also studied the subject widely, seems to be more a therapist of the empathically-hugging Leo Buscaglia school (he has sharp differences with orthodox psychotherapy). His approach to writing is as eclectic as his approach to his individual patients. Each book would be helpful to anyone considering or already undergoing psychoanalysis or psychotherapy, as well as to the general reader who may just wonder what it's all about. Marcia G. Fuchs, Guilford Free Lib., Ct.
