Recognizing children's natural delight in rhyme and wordplay, poet and teacher Lee Bennett Hopkins suggests ways for educators to use nursery rhymes, jump-rope jingles, and songs as springboards to the enjoyment of poetry. He also introduces twenty-four modern children's poets, including Nikki Giovanni, Shel Silverstein, and Carl Sandburg, through brief biographies and helpful bibliographies. This indispensable volume concludes with numerous activities--many suggested and successfully used by educators in the classroom-to get children excited about and involved in reading, writing, and enjoying poetry.

Pass the Poetry, Please! has been a staple in classrooms and libraries across the country for over twenty-five years and has proven itself an invaluable resource. This new edition-revised, enlarged, and updated-contains a wealth of new ideas for bringing children and poetry together. So turn the page and learn how you can pass the poetry!

About the Author:

Noted poet Lee Bennett Hopkins has edited or authored numerous books for children, including the I Can Read Books Hamsters, Shells, and Spelling Bees; A Pet for Me: Poems; and the ALA Notable Children's Book Surprises. The recipient of a Christopher Award and the University of Southern Mississippi's Medallion for "lasting contributions to children's literature," Mr. Hopkins lives in Florida.

From School Library Journal:
An attractively designed update of a standard title about introducing children to poetry, last published in 1987. Six poets have been added to the biography section, and a few have been cut; the essays have been revised to reflect the writers' work of the last 10 years. The section that offers activities aimed at exciting children about poetry has been shortened in the new edition, containing about half the number of headings, though some have been combined rather than eliminated; since they are meant to be starting points, nothing is lost in the paring down. If you have an older edition and find the biography section useful, buy the newer version. If you use it mainly for the examples of poetry forms and activities, you probably don't need it. If you don't own any version, this a must-purchase.
