Why is everybody so afraid of Jessie’s new doll, Frankenflopper? Is it because she’s ten times bigger than any kid on the block? Or is it because her creepy yellow eyes seem to follow you wherever you go? Master storyteller Judith Gorog brings us the story of a little girl and her not-so-ordinary doll—along with four other creepy tales—in her second collection of bizzare, icky, and scary-funny stories that are guaranteed to give chapter book readers goosebumps and giggles galore.

About the Author:
Judith Gorog is well known for her oddly unsettling collections of stories, including the popular Harper Trophy book In a Messy, Messy Room. Ms. Gorog lives in New Jersey with her husband and children.

Kimberly Bulken Root's drawings accompanied Judith Gorog's previous collection , In a Messy, Messy Room. She lives in rural Pennsylvania with her husband, the illustrator Barry Root, and their young daughter.

Kimberly Bulcken Root is the award-winning artist of several books for children. Her work includes When the Whippoorwill Calls, a New York Times Best Illustrated Book; Hugh Can Do and The Toll Bridge Troll, both ALA Notable Books; and gulliver in lilliput, a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year. She lives with her husband, illustrator Barry Root, and their children, Janna, Samuel, and Benjamin, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6. Five fun-to-read stories that focus on a "creepy place": that rickety old porch, a grandparent's attic, the woods near home. Gorog utilizes readers' imaginations and memories of such places to provide the requisite chills and giggles. In one tale, Jessie creates a big, ugly doll that possesses the necessary trappings of a Frankenstein monster. When Frankenflopper comes to life, things start to get interesting. The doll survives, but not without a close call with a pair of scissors. In the eeriest selection, Gar wants a pet tarantula. His mother becomes convinced that a dangerous, 10-inch spider in the local pet store is actually a guardian angel and considers buying it for her son. Who does the convincing? THE SPIDER! At points readers can feel the spider's evil presence. Root's moody line drawings add just enough visual imagery. A welcome addition that offers children a scary alternative to the standard "horror" fare being dished up in series books.?Jean-Marie Kliphuis, Nesconset Elementary School, NY
