Erin, a young loner, discovers that there is more to having a horse for a best friend than she expected, when she learns to take responsibility for the care of her horse, Spindrift, while, in turn, the horse helps Erin break out of her shell

From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-8 ``Equinetherapy'' is the reason that Erin's parents buy her a horse, hoping this will cure her timidity. Caring for Spindrift does enhance Erin's self-esteem, and she also grows to accept the frustrating realities of horse ownership, along with the joys. Readers who share Erin's desire to love a horse will relish the authentic lore given by her mentor, Aunt Lexie, who triumphs as the book's strongest character. They will also become acquainted with Spindrift, a true-to-life equine grump who merely tolerates her new owner. Experienced readers of this genre will recognize Spindrift as the spiritual sister to the cranky hero of Keeping Barney (Greenwillow, 1982) by Jessie Haas. The plot is believable and the writing smooth except for some soon-to-be-dated slang and one awkward intrusion of the horse's thoughts. Erin's family mentions the ``get out of your shell'' theme too often, but this won't deter horse fans from enjoying this memorable story.
