The first is intended to be answered by studying the facing illustration, the second by making the appropriate choice among three objects pictured below the text. Unfolding the right-hand page reveals the correct answer and shows Joey in the various stages of his examination. Pleasant watercolor and crayon illustrations show smiles on every faceeven Joey's as he's getting a shot. The minimal information here is aimed at children just becoming aware of the checkup routine; it will help first-timers learn what to expect and give older toddlers an opportunity to relive the experience in a reassuring way. Preschoolers and older children will find A Doctor's Tools (Dodd, 1985) by Kenny DeSantis more interesting and informative, while Helen Oxenbury's The Checkup (Dial, 1983) provides a less serious look at the situation for all age groups.
