The Reagan administration has projected defense spending over the next four years at $2 trillion dollars (i.e., $2100 dollars per year for every man, woman, and child in America) on the grounds that the U.S. arsenal is inferior to the Soviet's and had suffered a decade of neglect. Gervasi examines in minute detail the balance of forces between the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as their respective allies, in the strategic and conventional spheres (200 pages of appendixes cover strategic power, warheads, ground forces, tanks, ships, and planes). Gervasi provides evidence that President Reagan's claims have no basis in fact. Instead, he asserts that U.S. superiority has never been challenged.
