Introduction

This dictionary is intended especially for users who already have a grasp of the basics of the language and who require a handy dictionary of medium size, which will nonetheless provide them with a comprehensive survey of modern everyday German and English. It achieves this by placing the emphasis on current usage -- from the colloquial to the more formal -- and by giving extensive treatment of subjects such as commerce, computer technology and sport which are relevant to the modern world. Hence the dictionary is equally suitable for the business person at the office, the student both at school and at college, and the interested general reader at home.

However, the dictionary is designed to enable the user not only to understand the foreign language, but also to write and speak it with confidence- To this end there are numerous features which show how the translations given are used, such as the guiding system of indicating words to distinguish between alternatives, the typical subjects and objects for verbs and nouns that go with adjectives, and the rich store of examples, all of which show how usage and hence translation vary according to context. Also the basic, most frequently used words are treated in depth, as these so often cause problems when trying to communicate or express oneself in the foreign language. Words which have been affected by the Spelling Reform are marked on the German-English side of the dictionary with a symbol. The new spelling forms are listed alphabetically in the supplement (pp 1198-1213) with their corresponding old spelling form given alongside. The supplement also gives explanations on the extent of the Spelling Reform and the ways words are affected by it (pp 1193-1197).

The new-look third edition of the Collins Concise German Dictionary helps you make even more effective use of the text. One of its most innovative features is the way the main text of the dictionary is linked to the Sentence Builder supplement in the middle of the book. This completely new section draws on the wealth of lexicographic information to be found in our databases of authentic German and English, both written and spoken, from such diverse sources as contemporary literature, press articles and recordings of real-life conversations currently totalling over 370 million words. We have also included secdons on the telephone, business and personal correspondence with authentic sample letters which cover every situation from applying for a job to accepting a wedding invitation. Together they provide a comprehensive guide to self-expression in German, with hundreds of example phrases grouped thematically to help you communicate in fluent, natural German.

Our encyclopaedic entries on key aspects of German, British and American culture such as everyday life, literature, politics, history, education and organization attempt to bridge the gap between the differing cultures. These entries are written in the native language of the user they are designed to benefit; this means that entries on German items are in English and entries on British and American items are in German. The content of the dictionary is based on our famous large edition which has become the market leader and the standard by which others are judged. This dictionary shares the outstanding features of the larger edition, including exceptional clarity of layout and modernity of approach.
