Henry Coffin,
Private Investigator,
At Your Service

Twelve-year old Henry Coffin helps out his dad at the Coffin and Pale Detective Agency. Only one thing is missing: he's itching for the chance to work on a case of his own. And then beautiful, blonde Lily Larson walks in. In he dreaming? Lily wants them to find her mother -- who's lost for the fourth time! Henry knows he's close to solving the mystery when he stumbles upon a secret mileage log, the petals of a strange flower, and a painted wooden stork -- some very mysterious clues. What he doesn't know is that his search for Lily's missing mother may lead him into some very serious danger.

About the Author:

Eve Bunting was born in Ireland and came to California with her husband and three children. She is one of the most acclaimed and versatile children's book authors, with more than two hundred novels and picture books to her credit. Among her honors are many state awards, the Kerlan Award, the Golden Kite Award, the Regina Medal, the Mystery Writers of America and the Western Writers of America awards, and a PEN International Special Achievement award for her contribution to children's literature. In 2002, Ms. Bunting was chosen to be Irish-American Woman of the Year by the Irish-American Heritage Committee of New York.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-6-- Henry Coffin, the 12-year-old son of a private investigator, spends the summer before seventh grade realizing a long-held fantasy as he helps a high-school ``gorgeous babe'' find her kidnapped mother. Complete with dark basements, slimy pools, stolen art objects, and threatening kidnappers, the mystery unfolds skillfully and swiftly, aided by a breezy, humorous style. Henry's hero is Sam Spade, whom he imitates with a tough, macho swagger that, while often witty and tongue-in-cheek, is also frequently sexist. That his mother has been missing since Henry was an infant adds a touch of poignancy to his cool pose. The suspenseful story, simple style, and fast pace will hold the interest of even the most reluctant readers. --Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME
