About the Author:
Alan Chute, Ph.D., is the chief learning strategist and director of the Center for Excellence in Distance Learning at Lucent Technologies, the worldwide leader in innovative communication equipment. Dr. Chute developed the AT&T National Teletraining Center and Teletraining Networks, which won the 10-Year Distinguished Service to the Industry award from the United States Distance Learning Association. With over twenty-five years of professional experience in distance learning, Dr. Chute has authored more than fifty articles on a range of subjects, including advanced learning systems, reengineering the training organization, and the future of distance learning. He has also taught at the university level and was director of a statewide medical distance learning program. Melody Thompson, D.Ed., is the Assistant Director of Penn StateÕs World Campus, the University new unit for delivering programs to distance learners around the world. She is also an Assistant Professor of Adult Education, teaching graduate-level courses in distance learning and adult education. Dr. Thompson has written and co-authored many articles, book chapters, and publications on distance learning, the history of adult education, and diversity issues in education and was previously a writer and editor for The American Journal of Distance Education. Burton Hancock, Ph.D., is Director of the Nationwide Insurance Performance Improvement Organization with responsibility for the training of more than 20,000 property casualty company employees and agents. A former senior manager at Ernst & Young, he led the training effort for their business process reengineering.
