I had an extremely hard time learning Spanish. That's why I have sympathy for people trying to learn English--which is an even crazier language to learn than Spanish. When I was in Mexico, I almost went nuts trying to get the pronunciation and the verb tenses, so I gave up and started listening to music. That's when I got it.
When I came back to the States in 1969, my students--teenagers and adults from 15 different countries--knew Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, so I used their songs to teach. It worked and I've been doing it ever since. For this new edition of Sing it! I had a great time choosing 81 songs and developing activities to go along with them. I love getting letters and e-mail from people in Burma, Bogota and Bangkok--and from Literacy Volunteers, correctional institutions and high schools in the USA--telling me that they love it, too.
