The trusted, respected name of Standard & Poor's (S & P) lends credence to these ratings. The 300 entries in Part 1 include rating, related ratings, holding company, state where headquartered, states in which it is licensed, rationale (including a unique "claims-paying ability" rating), and a five-year financial performance chart on major firms. Part 2 is simply S & P's ratings on 3,000 companies arranged alphabetically. This section covers "qualified solvency ratings," which include three categories of financial strength based on publicly available information.
Additionally, in the introduction, S & P offers users free consumer updates available by calling their Rating Information Department. Also here the rating definitions are discussed in detail in easy-to-understand terms. All public libraries and business collections will want to add this valuable new resource. The various Best's Insurance Reports (e.g., Life-Health, Property-Casualty) cover thousands of companies but are much more expensive.
