This basic text has been written for students of architecture and building construction and is appropriate for use in certain architectural engineering and engineering technology courses. It is intended for use by individuals doing structural planning and schematic or preliminary design work rather than by those responsible for the detailed structural designs required for contract documents. It includes discussion of indeterminate frame behaviour and methods are presented illustrating how one can readily estimate the approximate design moment values. A well-illustrated chapter on the history of reinforced concrete architecture distinguishes this from an engineering text. Furthermore, the development of the basic flexural theory of reinforced concrete provides an understanding of the differences between designing beams in reinforced concrete and those of timber and steel. Chapters devoted to foundation systems and to prestressed concrete principles are included. An overview summarizes the complete preliminary structural design of a two-storey building.
