Student learning is the focus of Angela Lumpkin's approach to teaching. She first seeks to learn who her students are and what they know so that she and her students can work together to determine what they need to know and be able to do. This instructional approach has enabled her to help students effectively explore the fields of physical education, exercise science, and sport studies through the variety of course she had taught from history and philosophy of physical education and sport to sport management. Dr. Lumpkin began her career at the University of North Carolina in 1974 where she advanced to become the first female in the Department of Physical Education to become a full professor. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Arkansas and her Ph.D. in sport history is from The Ohio State University. Dr. Lumpkin also has an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is currently Dean of the School of Education at the University of Kansas. Dr. Lumpkin has held leadership positions in the North Carolina Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NCAHPERD), the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, and many other professional organizations. She is the author of seven books including Introduction to Physical Education, Exercise Science and Sport Studies, fifth edition, and has written numerous refereed articles and made over 100 professional presentations.
Dr. Sharon Kay Stoll serves as the current Director of the Center for ETHICS* at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho. Dr. Stoll is considered one of the leading authorities in competitive moral education intervention techniques for college age adults in America. Professor of Physical Education and Director of the Center for ETHICS*, Dr. Stoll is a Distinguished Faculty Member and winner of a prestigious University Award for Teaching at the University of Idaho. A former public school teacher, coach, and athlete, Dr. Stoll holds a Ph.D. in sport philosophy from Kent State University, and is the creator and director of the first program in America to be directed toward moral education with competitive populations. The Idaho program includes a minor in sport ethics at the undergraduate level, a master’s degree in sport science, and a Ph.D. in Education. Dr. Stoll is well known for knowledge in teaching and methodology as applied to pedagogy in moral education and character development. In the twenty years Dr. Stoll has been a professor at the University of Idaho, she has published 63+ major journal articles, 20 plus refereed abstracts, 24+ referenced proceedings, authored 8 books and 45 chapters in books, presented over 106 national and international scholarly publications, and given over 100 workshops and clinics. She is consistently ranked in the top 1% in teaching evaluations within the College of Education as well. Her eight books include, “Who Says This IS Cheating”, and “Sport Ethics: Applications for Fair Play”.
Jennifer M. Beller is a Research and Measurement Specialist to the University of Idaho’s Center for ETHICS and the College of Education. Formerly an Associate Professor at Eastern Michigan University, she currently teaches master’s and doctoral classes in research, measurement and evaluation, moral reasoning and moral development, and character education. She holds a doctorate in Sport Ethics and Philosophy from the University of Idaho and is an Affiliate Faculty Member to the Graduate School. She is internationally known for her measurement and evaluation of moral reasoning, moral development, and moral education of competitive and general populations. She the principle author the Hahm-Beller Values Choice Inventory, the definitive moral reasoning instrument in use today for competitive populations that is both valid and reliable. She is a major contributing author/developer to the RSBH Values Judgment Inventory, a valid and reliable cognitive tool that examines an individual’s moral reasoning versus social reasoning. She regularly conducts research, writes, and presents in character education, moral development, and moral reasoning both nationally and internationally and has been features on such programs as Niteline, ESPN sports, Fox News, KREM 2 TV documentaries, the BBC TB in Manchester England, and various newspaper, and radio shows through out the country. She has written or co-authored: Seven books, can chapter in books, 42+ journal publications, 25 abstracts and proceedings, 70+ scholarly and invited talks throughout the world on character education, moral development and moral reasoning of general and competitive populations, developed 5 videos, and 1 interactive multi-media CDROM on performance enhancing drugs and the nature of character, plus presented 50+ character education workshops. She has consulted with: The United States Military Academy, The Unites States Air Force Academy, The US Central Intelligence Agency, the Idaho Supreme Court, The American Bar Association, Cobb county Schools, Marietta. Georgia, Nation Federation of High School Activity Associations, Michigan High School Athletic Association, Idaho High School Activity Association, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and National Coaches Association. She won the Eastern Michigan University Scholarly Recognition Award in 1995-1996 and was listed as one of the top scholars in the 150-year history of Eastern Michigan University. She, her husband and son live on the Mule’s End Ranch in the Hoo Doo Mountains of Idaho, where they raise horses and mules and enjoy the ranching life.
