In recent years, the interest of scientists and society in the biological effects caused by both the pollution of waterbodies, and the restoration of deteriorated waters, has grown considerably. Among these biological effects, the changes that occur in the phototrophic compartment of aquatic ecosystems are of major importance. The mechanisms underlying these phenomena were the central theme of a specialized conference on "Selection mechanisms controlling biomass distribution between cyanobacteria, phytoplankton and macrophyte species". This volume contains 27 of the 55 papers presented at the conference. Topics covered include light: climate and hydrodynamics; nutrients, physical and chemical factors; biological interactions; and physical, chemical and biological interactions.
