This book is devoted to the mathematical description of interesting phenomena which occur in solids, such as ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Superconductivity and its interaction with ferro and antiferromagnetism is of special importance since over the last 15 years the temperature of superconductivity existence has been raised from 15-20 K to 100 K, which will allow in the near future numerous practical applications of this phenomenon. Although the book is written in a rather rigorous mathematical language it is made easy to read by detailed derivation for those having only an undergraduate background in physics. Key Features: - new field of research - common formalism for superconductivity and magnetism - easy and simple models - easy reading which includes all derivations - good for graduate students and young researchers

From the Back Cover:

Why is there a need for a book on itinerant ordering in crystals?

In recent years, there has been extensive new research in the field of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) prompted by the experimental discoveries of high temperature superconductivity in cuprates as well as new superconducting materials, e.g. UGe2, ZrZn2, URhGe, which show weak ferromagnetic properties. Steady new developments in the more established field of itinerant ferromagnetism have also taken place.

This book will act as an introduction to the field of itinerant ferromagnetism, itinerant antiferromagnetism and electronic superconductivity, allowing the reader to navigate independently through extensive new literature being published on this subject. The book addresses similarities between all these processes, the evidence of their close relationship being viewed under experimental conditions. This is reflected by the similarities in formalism developed within the same model of itinerant electrons.

Due its introductory nature, the book will move step by step through simple models to the basics of the many body theory and help the reader understand the modified Hartree-Fock approximation and coherent potential approximation. These approximations will be used to evaluate, quantitatively, the minimum energy of the system and the values of critical interactions.

Due to the rapid development in this field, every attempt will be made to include and relate the results of the most recent research in the area of electronic SC, itinerant F and AF.

The book is primarily intended for young scientists working in the field, as well as graduate students and was developed during the preparation of students for their M.Sc. dissertations in this field during a two-semester course.
