Mathematics is an essential part of much vocational education, whether at craft level or a diploma in business and finance course. Understanding mathematics helps all students to identify problems, organize data into a usable form and test possible solutions. This publication reviews such issues as the use of information technology in teaching mathematics, practical work and its assessment, and the different mathematical abilities of students who enrol on vocational courses. A sample mathematics policy shows what factors should be considered by colleges when planning mathematics provision in order to ensure that students on vocational courses will be able to apply mathematics in their future occupations. The findings should interest lecturers, students, employers and all others involved with vocational education and training.
