During the period 1989-90 HMI carried out a series of inspections focusing on the work of very able pupils in maintained primary and secondary schools. This publication provides an outline of the current state of provision for the very able and describes some of the better practice taking place in shcools and LEAs. The report shows that although most schools made some reference to children of all abilities in their planning documents, relatively few had developed policies specific to the needs of very able children.
