The nature and extent of mineral workings and spoil tips in England at 1st April 1988 are surveyed. Some 114,000 hectares of land were affected by permissions for surface mineral extraction or related disposal of mineral wastes. About 20,600 hectares of workings had been reclaimed to another use in the six-year period since 1982, the date of the last survey. The results of this survey are analyzed on a regional and national level and will assist local authorities (as mineral planning authorities) to operate more effectively in their role of development control. It will also assist in monitoring some of the effects of the Town and Country Planning (Minerals) Act 1981, and contribute to future national policies regarding mineral workings and land reclamation.
