About the Author:

Carole Crumley received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. Her interdisciplinary teams have studied the history and ecology of Burgundy, France for over 20 years. Known principally for her theoretical contributions to organizational structure and regional political economy, she is Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. William Marquardt received his Ph.D. from Washington University, St. Louis, and has done archaeological work in France, the American Southwest, Midwest, and Southeast, and Florida. He is Curator in Archaeology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Florida. His interests include the emergence of complexity among fisher-gatherer-hunters, the application of dialectical concepts in regional historical-ecological studies, and the application of historical-ecological insights to contemporary issues.
