Software Defined Radio (SDR) is expected to be the solution for the integration between the several current wireless standards; it enables interaction between analogue and digital ports and links. This book provides a consolidated knowledge of new measurement systems and associated modeling strategies, including information from the analogue and digital domains, to aid the development of improved front end radio designs.

The book explains the fundamental theory of SDR and how it relates to characterization and modeling. It presents the instrumentation used to characterize mixed-domain systems, and explores some of the strategies used in the modelling and characterization of those systems. These modelling and characterization approaches are then applied to some practical examples, before another chapter discusses the results of this system characterization in the presence of several excitation signals. Finally, a complete SDR system will be addressed and characterized using previous tools, allowing a thoughtful analysis of SDR systems.

About the Author:

Pedro Miguel Cruz was born in Ovar, Portugal in 1982. He received a M.Sc. in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (2008) and a PhD in Electrical Engineering (2012), both from Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal.
From Sept. 2006 to April 2007, he has worked at Portugal Telecom Inovação as a trainee in a project of localization systems based in wireless devices. Currently, he is a post-doctoral researcher with the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) being involved in the characterization and modeling of nonlinear distortion in software defined radio and cognitive radio front ends, as well as, high-speed data converters (A/D & D/A).
He was a reviewer for IET Electronics Letters and IEEE TCAS-II and co-authored more than 20 international and national papers including book chapters, journals and conferences. He has been recognized with the 3rd place in the GAAS Association PhD Student Fellowship for EuMIC 2009.

Diogo C. Ribeiro was born in Ferreira do Zêzere, Portugal in 1988. He received the M.Sc. degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering in December 2011 at Universidade de Aveiro. He is now a PhD student in the same university, since September 2012.
Mr. Ribeiro has as main interest's software defined radio measurement and nonlinear mixed-signal characterization. In 2012, he was recognized with the Best Student Paper Award 2012 at the 6th Congress of Portuguese Committee of URSI.

Nuno Borges Carvalho is a Full Professor at the Universidade de Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal and a Senior Research Scientist with the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Universidade de Aveiro, where he coordinates the wireless communication thematic area and the Radio Systems Group.
He co-authored "Intermodulation in Microwave and Wireless Circuits” (Artech House, 2003) and "Microwave and Wireless Measurement Techniques” (Cambridge Press, 2013). He has been a reviewer and author of over 200 papers in magazines and conferences. He co-holds four patents. His main research interests include software defined radio front ends, wireless power transmission, nonlinear distortion analysis in microwave/wireless circuits and systems, and measurement of nonlinear phenomena. He has recently been involved in the design of dedicated radios and systems for newly emerging wireless technologies.
Dr. Borges Carvalho is the chair of the IEEE MTT-11 Technical Committee. He is a member of IEEE MTT-20, MTT-24, and MTT-26. He is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Microwave Magazine and the chair of the URSI-Portugal Metrology Group.
