The Terminology of Health and Medicine is a learner-oriented, self-study, programmed text. It is organized into distinct frames that require the individual to actively participate in his- or her learning by writing in and confirming answers. The text is arranged by body systems and medical/surgical specialty areas. The medical terminology selected for this text is based upon the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) Diagnostic Code, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs), and Nursing Diagnoses.

KEY FEATURES

  • Unit Objectives: The unit objectives state the expected learning outcomes.
  • Unit Openings: Serving as an introduction, the unit opener gives the learning concepts for the unit. It is followed by a brief overview with appropriate tables and figures.
  • Primary Word Elements: Following the unit opener are primary word elements. These word elements are used throughout the unit and the learner is encouraged to master their meanings. New to this edition is a Glossary of Word Elements of approximately 900 entries.
  • Full-Color Art and New Design: To assist the learner in better understanding the concepts being presented, full color illustrations are appropriately placed throughout the text. New to this edition are tables of each body system with an overview of the system, its organs, and functions. Also added are numerous photographs of diseases, disorders, and x-rays. To enhance learning, a colorful, new design has been developed for the text.
  • Explanation Frames: These frames describe and explain a selected learning concept that relates to the body system being studied, its organs and functions, the terminology associated with the unit, medical/surgical specialty area, diseases and disorders, selected drugs, and abbreviations.
  • Essential Terminology with Pronunciation Key, Word Elements, and Word Division: Medical terms are an integral part of each unit. As a word element is introduced, selected terminology that directly relates to the word element is given, along with its pronunciation key, word division, and meaning. Where appropriate each medial term is divided into its word elements. The primary word elements are included in the text while all other word elements may be found in the Glossary of Word Elements.
  • For Review Frames: To enable the learner to review word elements that are commonly used in medical terminology review frames are provided throughout the text.
  • Diseases and Disorders: Common diseases, disorders, and/or conditions are included in each unit.
  • Drugs Used for Diseases and Disorders: Selected classifications of drugs and examples are included in each unit as they relate to the body system or medical/surgical specialty area being studied.
  • Abbreviations: Selected abbreviations with their meanings are included in each unit. These abbreviations are in current use and directly associated with the subject of the unit.
  • In the Spotlight: This is a new feature that presents a current finding in medicine or an interesting topic that relates to the subject of the unit.
  • Case Studies: A synopsis of a selected disease and/or disorder is provided and includes present history, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and risk factors. The questions that follow are directly related to the case study. Answers are provided at the end of the activity.
  • Review Exercises: A variety of review exercises are provided to help the learner assess his or her level of understanding of the concepts presented in the unit. Approximately 700 review items are included in the text.
  • Review A: Word Elements
    This review allows the learner to check his or her knowledge of some of the word elements presented in the unit. Medical words are divided into their word parts with each word element identified as Prefix (P), Word Root (R), Combining Form (CF), and/or Suffix (S). The learner provides the meaning of the word element.
  • Review B: Medical Terms
    Selected medical terms and their meaning are arranged in a matching format. The learner matches the meaning and/or definition from Column II with the correct medical term in Column I.
  • Review C: Short Answer
    The learner provides a short answer for a given description as it relates to Skin Signs (Integumentary System); Types of Body Movements (Skeletal System); Types of Exercises (Muscular System); and then Diseases and Disorders (Nervous System; Special Senses; Endocrine System; Cardiovascular System; Blood, Lymph and The Immune System; Digestive System; Respiratory System; Urinary System; Female Reproductive System; and Male Reproductive System).
  • Review D: Unscramble the Words
    Selected medical terms have been scrambled and the learner unscrambles the word. This is a fun and challenging -exercise and allows the learner to check his or her spelling competency of selected terms.
  • Review E: Drugs Used for Diseases/Disorders
    Selected drugs and/or their classifications are provided in a short answer format. A definition or description is given and the learner provides the answer.
  • Review F: Abbreviations
    Presented in a fill-in-the-blank format, selected abbreviations and/or their meanings are given and the learner provides the correct answer. Answers to the Review Exercises are provided in Appendix A.
  • Appendix A: Answer Key for the Review Exercises. All answers are provided so that you may easily check your work.
  • Appendix B: Glossary of Word Elements contain an alphabetical listing of 900 word elements that are included in the text and/or those that are presented in the word division. This list may be used as a ready reference for the learner.
  • Appendix C: An alphabetical arrangement of over 732 abbreviations includes a comprehensive listing of commonly used abbreviations with a separate list of charting abbreviations and symbols. Note: not all of these abbreviations are included in the units of study; therefore, they may be used to enhance the learner's scope of knowledge as appropriate.
  • Appendix D: List of Tables and Figures included in the text. The text includes 21 Tables and 94 Figures and/or Photographs.
  • Index: A complete list of medical terms, diseases, disorders, abbreviations that are included in the text, and page references for tables and figures.
