This book forms a complete guide to the installation, maintenance, and service of gas, oil, and electric forced warm air heating systems. It explores—in great detail—a large base of newer as well as traditional equipment, using the principles and practices of older furnaces as a means of understanding the newer, electronically controlled, high-efficiency furnaces. Topics include climate control; comfort; combustion and fuels; parts common to all furnaces; components of gas-burning furnaces; basic electricity and electrical symbols; schematic wiring diagrams; using electrical test instrument and equipment; external furnace wiring; controls common to all forced air furnaces; gas furnace controls; high-efficiency furnaces; components of oil-burning furnaces; oil furnace controls; electric heat; estimating the heating load; evaluating a heating system; installation practice; heating system maintenance and customer relations; energy conservation; indoor air quality; zoning; hydronic heating; and heat pumps and integrated systems. For practicing heating/climate control or HVAC technicians as well as anyone intersted in heating/climate control.

The fifth edition of Warm Air Heating for Climate Control has been extensively updated, using the latest information from the heating and cooling industry. The chapter sequence remains the same and gives the technician an understanding of the installation and service of forced-air heating equipment, hydronic systems, heat pumps, and add-on air conditioning. Former Chapters 1 and 2 were combined to allow for the addition of a new Chapter 2 on safety.

The following is a brief description of the major changes in the chapters.

New Chapter on Safety. Chapter 2 was added to provide safety information on handling of tools, using ladders, and working with toxic materials.

Updated Information on Parts Common to All Furnaces. In Chapter 4 we describe the application of the variable air volume Fan Handler. We also updated the humidifier section with new equipment and wiring diagrams.

Additional Information on Integrated Computer Furnace Control Systems. In Chapter 12 we expanded the sequences of operation and troubleshooting of the Honeywell SmartValve system and the White-Rodgers Total Furnace Control system.

New Energy Conservation Information. In Chapter 20 we included the requirements to meet a typical residential energy code. We also provide a means for the reader to evaluate the energy efficiency of a residential window system.

Completely Revised Chapter on Indoor Air Quality. We revised the text of Chapter 21 for easier reading and included new information on HEPA filters, heat recovery ventilation, andgermicidal lamps.

Updated Information on Zoning. We included the Honeywell Mastertrol system and the popular California Economizer zone system in Chapter 22. Both systems have detailed application, installation, and adjustment data.

Expanded Hydronics. In Chapter 23 we show how to design a multizone series-loop hot-water system. We also added a hydronic/air heating/air cooling integrated system.

Completely Revised Chapter on Add-On Cooling and Heat Pumps. We start Chapter 24 with a new explanation of the refrigeration cycle and then explain the use of each cycle component. We added some air conditioning service techniques. We also included the various applications of GeoExchange (geothermal) heat pump systems and describe how each is unique in its operation.

Each chapter includes a list of objectives. These are useful to the teacher for class preparation and for curriculum development. The objectives and the study questions also help the student prepare for a successful career in the climate control industry.
