This book provides basic information and encouragement for the first-time community college student and the non-traditional student–it shows that attending college and balancing work with family can be accomplished. It covers a range of topics, examines reasons for attending college, teaches study techniques, and explores life after community college. Each chapter discusses a major ";college survival"; topic and provides a wealth of information for anyone who has stepped onto campus for the first time. This new edition streamlines the chapters and presents topics as they naturally unfold during the first semester in college. The very important issue of time management is integrated throughout the book so that students can discover different ways of staying on task.

From the Back Cover:

In a text all their own, community college students have a guide to success in The Community College Experience, Second Edition.  In an honest, straightforward, and encouraging voice, Baldwin provides community college students practical practical exercises that address their greatest needs, including time management, critical thinking and academic integrity.

Each chapter broadly explores college survival topics, a must-have resource for any student stepping onto campus for the first time.  This book is essential reading for community college students, tackling issues that they need to help them understand the culture and function of college.

Features include:

  • NEW!  Time Management Information and Exercises--Integrated into each chapter, students can learn how time management applies to each topic of student success.  Exercises allow students to stop, reflect, and think critically about how they spend their time and what they can do to manage it more effectively.
  • Critical Thinking Exercises--Allow students to think through questions common to any college experience and discover effective solutions.
  • Integrity Matters--In each chapter, this feature explores both personal and academic integrity, teaching students how these are essential to education and to life.

“I like the fact that this text is written with the community college student in mind.  Other texts seem to ignore how different the freshman year experience is at the community college as compared to a traditional residential university.  I also like the practical counsel offered in various sections of each chapter.  These are very real, very honest and extremely engaging to the intended audience.” Larry Saffioti, Tidewater Community College

“I found the information in the text to be very easy to read and practical which always makes these topics more meaningful to students.  The use of profiles and critical thinking exercises allows students to be able to apply themselves to a given situation and think about how to handle it the best way possible...It is one thing to start college but it is another to know why you are even doing it and I believe this is a strength of the text.” James Mendoza, Tacoma Community College
