Natural Hazards focuses on hazards as the interface between humanity and its needs for space and resources, as well as on the ongoing geologic processes of Earth and features many new Canadian examples and discussions while retaining the best U.S. and international concepts. The second Canadian edition strikes an ideal balance between the scientific and the human aspects of natural hazards, combining basic scientific principles within a solid social framework.

From the Back Cover:

A major earthquake in Tokyo would affect trade in the ports of Vancouver and Seattle, the economy of Silicon Valley in California, and the price of computers in Toronto and Halifax. Events that were local disasters in the past may now become global catastrophes with the risk to populations and economic wealth growing rapidly.

Natural Hazards illustrates the geological process of the Earth as they become hazards that directly, and often violently, impact the human community on a local and global level. The second Canadian edition balances Canadian data and perspectives with the best examples from around the world in this non-technical survey of the Earth’s surface processes.

About The Cover: A snowboarder takes an extreme crash in a massive avalanche in Whistler, British Columbia. Most avalanches occur in remote, uninhabited mountains and consequently go unnoticed, but snow avalanche fatalities are increasing because more people are participating in winter recreational activities, notably skiing and snowboarding.

Hazard City: Assignments in Applied Geology, Fourth Edition

Included with every new copy of the text is access to Hazard City, an online environment that you can access through the companion website for this text:  www.mygeoscienceplace.ca. Hazard City is a fictional town that puts you in the role of a practicing geologist — gathering and analyzing real data, evaluating risk, and making assessments and recommendations. It contains 11 activities designed to help you become a more informed citizen:

  • Earthquake Damage Assessment
  • Volcanic Hazard Assessment
  • Flood Insurance Rate Maps
  • Landslide Hazard Assessment
  • Shoreline Property Assessment
  • Tsunami/Storm Surge
  • Snowpack Monitoring
  • Ground Water Contamination
  • Coal Property Evaluation
  • Landfill Siting
  • Map Reading
About the Author:

John Clague is one of Canada’s leading authorities in Quaternary and environmental earth sciences; Professor and Shrum Chair in Science at Simon Fraser University; CRC chair in Natural Hazards research; Emeritus Scientist, Geological Survey of Canada; Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; Professional Geologist, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia; 30 years of experience in surficial/terrain mapping, Quaternary stratigraphic investigations, engineering and environmental interpretations of surficial geological information, and natural hazard studies; noted for local, national, and international research collaboration with other geologists, geographers, biologists, and physicists.

Edward A. Keller is professor of environmental geology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he holds a joint appointment with the Environmental Studies Program and the Department of Geological Sciences. Professor Keller’s research focuses on natural hazards, including wildfires, flooding, and earthquakes. He is also evaluating the environmental impacts of ecotourism. Professor Keller received his doctorate from Purdue University in 1973; as a graduate student, he wrote the first five chapters of the first edition of Environmental Geology.  Professor Keller enjoys teaching and research, and hopes his textbooks help students to appreciate geology and to assist them in becoming better and more informed citizens in our complex world.

Bob Blodgett has taught geology and environmental science at Austin Community College (ACC) since 1995. He loves teaching and has been on the faculty of Ohio State University, Dickinson College, and Chapman University. He has also taught geology at Cranbrook Institute of Science and at Oakland University. Bob has worked as a geologist at the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission, Texas Department of Health, Texas Bureau of Economic Geology, Exxon Production Research Corporation, and Shell Oil Company. He is currently a Professor of Geology in the ACC Department of Physical Sciences, where he teaches courses in geology and environmental science.
