Known for its practical, applied approach, John Venn's Assessing Student's with Special Needs, 5/e continues to focus on how teachers can use assessment as a guide to instruction.  This noteworthy revision focuses on what teachers really need to know to include assessment in the curriculum.  Coverage includes all of the core information expected of an assessment text, but the book goes far beyond the basics by addressing multicultural considerations, technology and assessment, high-stakes testing, and the reauthorization of IDEA.  The book clearly shows how assessment is more than giving a test to a child, but is an essential tool for teachers as they help students achieve, learn, develop, and grow.

From the Back Cover:

Well respected for its practical, applied approach to testing and measurement, this widely popular text focuses on how teachers can use evaluation as part of instruction. In this revision the author highlights what teachers really need to know in order to include assessment in the teaching and learning process. Coverage includes all of the core information expected in an assessment text and yet goes far beyond the basics to address multicultural considerations, curriculum-based measurement, curriculum-based assessment, and the most current versions of the most widely used tests. Included are a number of highly useful teaching and learning aids, many of which are updated with expanded coverage and new examples, among the highlights:

  • Expanded coverage of curriculum-based measurement, progress monitoring, and response to intervention.
  • Updated information on the assessment process as required by IDEA regulations.
  • Many new and revised figures, tables, and guides that help readers more easily connect assessment strategies and procedures with instruction.
  • An expanded focus on assessment.
About the Author:

John Venn is a Professor Emeritus in the College of Education and Human Services at the University of North Florida. John’s experience includes serving as a classroom teacher, an educational diagnostician, a university professor, a researcher, a grant writer, and an administrator. His teaching, research, and service interests focus on how to assess and evaluate students with special needs as well as on curriculum-based assessment and measurement. John’s interests extend to technology and online learning; he maintains a website dedicated to assisting teachers with student assessment, and he has taught online courses in assessment. John is committed to finding practical solutions to the most difficult problems and issues in testing and measurement. For this reason, he spends considerable time in schools where he learns first hand how teachers are conducting assessment. John takes what he learns in the schools back to the university where he incorporates his experiences into his classes and scholarship.
