From the Inside Flap:
Preface

The Certified Professional Secretary Examination (CPS) Review Series, the three-volume set of review manuals and their corresponding Self-Study Guides for each of the three parts of the Certified Professional Secretary Examination, is a joint publication of Prentice Hall and the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAPTM). The content of each module is based on the current CPS Examination Review Guide published by IAAP. CPS Examination

The rewards for achieving the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) rating are numerous, as attested to by the more than 57,000 CPS holders. These include: pride in accomplishment, increased self-esteem, greater respect from employers and peers, and confidence to assume greater responsibilities as well as possible college credit toward a degree, pay increases, bonuses, and opportunities for advancement. In today's work place, having the CPS credential can be assurance of employability.

The CPS Examination is a one-day, three-part examination based on the premise that a professional secretary should know how to apply the principles of good human relations and have basic knowledge of finance, business law, economics, communication, and management. It is expected that a competent secretary is thoroughly familiar with current techniques in office practice and procedures and is aware of developments in office systems and technology. To apply for approval to take the CPS Examination, request the "Capstone" from IAAP. The "Capstone" provides detailed information about the examination and an application form. CPS Examination Review Series

The CPS Examination Review Series provides valuable assistance to the administrative professional preparing for the CPS Examination, whether it is used for group review sessions or for self-study. The series provides an excellent learning tool that is focused on key topics that are necessary for passing the exam.

The format used for each of the manuals in the series is identical. The CPS Examination Review Series provides as much relevant information as possible to help in preparing for the CPS Examination. However, this does not imply that all information presented in the series will be included on the examinations.

Each chapter contains:

An overview introducing the reader to the chapter and its content Text in outline form, with examples highlighted in italics, to enhance the explanation given in the text Illustrations to aid understanding of concepts Review questions at the end of each chapter, developed in formats similar to those found in the CPS Examination Solutions to the review questions, with some explanation of correct answers, where needed, and references to portions of the outline that explain the answer more fully. For example:

1. (b)A-2
The outline reference pertains to: Section A, Point 2 in the chapter.

When a solution seems unclear, it is recommended that the section be reviewed for further clarification.

A complete Glossary of terms and definitions is included at the end of each manual. A reference is made to the chapter where the term may be found in context. CPS Examination Review Series Self-Study Guides

Each manual has a corresponding Self-Study Guide written as a companion tool rather than a formally structured workbook. These guides enhance material presented in the CPS Examination Review manuals and may be used for independent study and in accelerated, short-term group review courses.

The question arises as to why this series is formatted in this particular way. The response is simple: We want you to have a thorough, efficient review of the content that may appear on the CPS Examination. The purpose of the Self-Study Guide is to assist you in researching and building your own information bank. CPS Examination Review Guide

The current CPS Examination Review Guide should be used to direct any course of study. The Guide includes the examination outline, sample questions, bibliography of recommended study materials, and suggestions for exam review. The CPS Examination Review Guide is available for purchase through the IAAP Distribution Department: 10502 NW Ambassador Drive, PO Box 20404, Kansas City, MO 64195-0404; phone 816-891-6600; fax 816-891-9118; e-mail distribution@iaap-hq
