From the Back Cover:

BASIC SKILLS AND STRATEGIES FOR COLLEGE READINGS A TEXT WITH THEMATIC READER is designed for college students in a first-level reading course (7-10th grade level). The text focuses on the essential reading skills necessary for effective comprehension and logically develops each of its six instructional chapters with explanations, examples, and practice to help students progress smoothly. This sequence of development encourages students to connect and integrate the new skills and information they are learning with what they already know.

The text also features three Thematic Reading Units—personal development, American government, and biology—each with a complete college text chapter as well as 3 to 5 supporting articles on the unifying topic. These thematic units supply multiple exposures to a topic, thus providing a scaffolding of knowledge that allows students to handle more sophisticated material, encourages a meaningful/connected understanding of the topic, and promotes critical thinking as students view a topic from a variety of perspectives. The book also provides authentic reading tasks to help prepare students to meet the demands of the texts and tasks they will encounter in future classes.

The text also offers:

  • End-of-chapter and end-of-theme Web Exercises that direct students to Internet sites appropriate to a specific content-related task.
  • A Companion Website (www.prenhall.com/mcgrath) that provides students with Web links, supplementary reading, additional vocabulary, and comprehension practice.
  • A variety of high-interest paragraphs and mufti-paragraph expository pieces from texts, magazines, and newspapers on diverse subjects, including personal finance, using the Internet, music, personal development, environmental science, career exploration, geography, biology, history, health, American government, and human relations.
  • An Appendix—Taking Standardized Reading Tests—provides useful information in a format that allows instructors to use it when it is most appropriate for their students.
  • Students can self check odd-numbered exercises with the "Suggested Answers" in the backmatter, while even-numbered exercises and "Putting It All Together" exercises can be used to monitor progress.
