Presuming the morning is fine and the visitor prepared for an excursion, we now propose a visit to the romantic scenery and local associations of Muggleswicky--a place of much olden interest, once the retired abode of monastic piety, and long the favourite haunt of moss-trooping adventurers. Good roads, however, in abundance we cannot promise; but we shall experience how they used to mount the hills in former times, and the charms of the scenerywill in a sense make the rough roads plain and pleasing. A light vehicle or carriage, indeed, may go very comfortably by way of Greenhead; and those who go a pied on the north side of the river, will have an enchanting walk, and see peculiar beauties. The best mode of making the tour, however, is a cheval, as the fatigue of walking three miles is thus avoided. CONSETT. 119 and nearly all the beauties of the way secured to observation. Taking the road, then, on the south of the river, a cheval, we soon see on our left hand Consett cresting the hill, and now exhibiting only a respectable farm-house and surrounding plantations, that present an aspect of something superior. In the middle ages, however, Consett was the residence of the Grays, who were renowned chevaliers; and was subsequently famous as the paternal home of John Hall, Esq., an extraordinary genius, and a most powerful republican writer during the Commonwealth.
