Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English humorist who wrote novels, short stories, plays, poems, song lyrics, and numerous pieces of journalism. He was highly popular throughout a career that lasted more than seventy years, and his many writings continue to be widely read. He is best known for his novels and short stories of Bertie Wooster and his manservant Jeeves and for his settings of English upper-class society of the pre- and post-World War I era. He lived in several countries before settling in the United States after World War II. During the 1920s, he collaborated with Broadway legends like Cole Porter and George Gershwin on musicals and, in the 1930s, expanded his repertoire by writing for motion pictures. He was honored with a knighthood in 1975.

When Edmund Biffen Pyke died and left his large estate to his harebrained godson Biffen, the rest of the family thought he had slipped a cog. Especially with the two provisos for inheritance, one:  Biffen had to be 30 years old, and two:  Biffen had to be free of the clutches of the law  and, as he had never been in a festive occasion where Biffen and the local law had not come to blows, this seemed unlikely. Enter Lord Tilbury, Edmund's brother, incredibly rich himself, but willing to become richer, and to this end hires one Percy Pilbeam to lead Biffy down the path of temptation. Standing in his way? Biffy's sister Kay, who hires Jerry Shoesmith to keep her brother out of trouble. A little rubbing of the book corners and backstrip edges. A very slight cock of the spine.
