From the Publisher:
Toolkit: The text is structured to cover the three key areas that make up accounting and finance - financial accounting, management accounting, and business finance. In each chapter, the toolkit is applied and illustrated in the broader context of the business environment to highlight how accounting statements and financial information can be used to analyse business performance and improve management decision-making.
Currency: Contemporary issues, such as corporate governance and activity based costing, have been successfully incorporated into the text that not only strengthen the currency of the text but provide a refreshing alternative to the more traditional introductory accounting texts.
Flexible study resource: For students the text encourages an interactive learning approach. Chapters are closely linked to facilitate and ensure effective learning of the subject in a progressive way. Equally, chapters can be used individually, giving the lecturer the flexibility to maximise the benefits of the text.
Appendix: An appendix can be found at the end of the text which covers the basics of double entry bookkeeping. The style allows it to be used as a valuable learning tool or as a refresher to brush up on topics that may require further attention or on modules where coverage of these topics is required.
Extensive pedagogy: A comprehensive range of learning features and assessment material is integrated throughout the text to support students' study and reinforce the topics covered in each chapter. Each chapter opens with an introduction that sets the scene for the chapter and learning objectives. Key terms are highlighted throughout the text with an icon. A full explanation of each is contained in the glossary of key terms section at the end of each chapter. Each chapter includes worked examples and `progress checks' that provide regular application and reinforcement of the core concepts and techniques.
Press cuttings: Up to date press articles and extracts from the annual report and accounts of a major UK plc, including commentary and updates, contextualise and illustrate the relevance of current business issues.
Assessment material: An array of assessment material, such as review questions, discussion points, and exercises graded by difficulty, are included to provide the necessary support for student learning. Fully worked solutions to 45% of the chapter end exercises are found in one of the appendices at the end of the book.
Case studies: Found at the end of each part of the book, case studies integrate chapter topics, presenting students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge to develop analytical skills and the judgement required to deal with real life business problems.
