Christian blends suspense, humor, and interesting facts about African and Asian elephants, clowns, and animal trainers into a smooth, quick-moving plot, and guides readers in the detecting process without detracting from the exciting story. The ending is predictable, yet readers will feel satisfied, as though they have played a real part in solving the puzzle. McCue's black-and-white, detailed scratchboard illustrations complement the text, and the colorful cover will entice youngsters. Furthermore, the factual information may inspire them to investigate the nonfiction shelves. Providing more character development than the "Encyclopedia Brown" series, this title is an excellent introduction to chapter-book mysteries.

Although Sebastian's human, Detective John Quincy Jones, is technically assigned to the case, the cagey canine saves the day by locating the purloined pachyderm, reuniting two estranged brothers, and exposing the true identity of a clown, Rambling Rose--all in time for the circus to offer a special benefit performance. Christian includes a wealth of information about circuses and elephant behavior as well as a fairly detailed look at the detective process. Sebastian's trademark behaviors--his voracious appetite and a penchant for outrageous (yet somehow unnoticed) disguises--add to the fun. A sure bet for series fans, this will also be popular with beginning chapter book readers and mystery buffs. Kay Weisman
