PreSchool-Grade 1-- When each member of his family refuses to take him to the park on a particularly magnificent day, Milo the mole packs some necessities and heads out on his own. Anxious that he might not be able to find his way home, Milo cleverly leaves behind a trail of his possessions. But he soon realizes that the park is a lonely place without an audience to admire his feats. When the rest of the family discovers that their youngest is missing, they follow Milo's trail to a happy reunion. In simple language, French successfully depicts a preschooler's point of view. Scruton's crayoned pastel drawings highlight the action by including dialogue balloons. The book is nicely presented with both full-page illustrations and closeup vignettes of facial expressions. An adequate tale about the advantages and disadvantages of independence. --Joy Fleishhacker, Brooklyn Children's Museum, NY
