'Brother Cadfael sprang to life suddenly and unexpectedly when he was already approaching sixty, mature, experienced, fully armed and seventeen years tonsures.' So wrote Ellis Peters in her introduction to A RARE BENEDICTINE - three vintage tales of intrigue and treachery, featuring the monastic sleuth who has become a cult figure of crime fiction. The story of Cadfael's entry into the monastery at Shrewsbury has been known hitherto only to a few readers; now his myriad fans can discover the chain of events that let him into the Benedictine Order. Lavishly adorned with Clifford Harper's beautiful illustrations, these three tales show Cadfael at the height of his sleuthing form, with all the complexities of plot, vividly evoked Shropshire backgrounds and warm understanding of the frailties of human nature that have made Ellis Peters and international bestseller.

About the Author:
Ellis Peters was a pseudonym of Edith Pargeter, OBE. As Ellis Peters she was the bestselling author of twenty Brother Cadfael Chronicles and the illustrated short story collection A Rare Benedictine. Under her own name she wrote numerous critically acclaimed historical novels including A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury and The Brothers of Gwynedd Quartet. She was the recipient of the Crime Writer's Association and Cartier Diamond Dagger Award. She died in 1995.
From AudioFile:
Ellis Peters's historical mysteries featuring the twelth-century monk, Brother Cadfael, are enormously popular. This selection consists of three short stories, including the tale of how Cadfael joined the monastery in Shrewsbury. The stories lack the richness of detail and fascinating character development of the full-length Peters novels, and veteran reader Stephen Thorne has little scope to highlight his considerable talents. While this is not a distinguished recording, it is indispensable to the Brother Cadfael devotee. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
