Through a series of panoramic foldout photos, this dazzling book explores each of the 14 major ecosystems in the world -- rain forests, deserts, coral reefs, wetlands, tundra, oceans, coastlines, mountains, grasslands, etc. Using a revolutionary computer technique that blends photos to produce a single composite landscape, it depicts a range of animal & plant species native to each habitat & traces the intricate relationships within it. Each scene includes a habitat profile which outlines its characteristics -- including climate, geology, & the flora & fauna that flourish within the ecosystem s boundaries.

From Library Journal:
In this lavishly illustrated work, 14 major terrestrial and aquatic habitats of the world are depicted in computer-enhanced fold-out panoramas of representative ecosystems. Each habitat account also contains an introduction and a discussion of ecosystems dynamics, including human impacts, which are almost invariably negative. The book has a 16-page introduction covering general principles of ecology and a brief glossary. The impressive illustrations are, however, the heart of the matter. Unfortunately, the book is unlikely to hold up under much abuse because of the foldouts. That reservation aside, this is a very attractive and accessible introduction to the world's major ecological communities. Recommended for general and school libraries.?Bruce Neville, Univ. of Texas at El Paso Lib.

Review:
Fine photos and graphics blend in an excellent overview of the various habitats which hold an abundance of flora and fauna. The fold-out pages which appear throughout the title pack in a wealth of visual and graphic information: they may prove less durable under library circulation conditions, but this is still an exceptional, beautiful work with details unparalleled in other natural histories. -- Midwest Book Review
