Are Women Human?: Astute and Witty Essays on the Role of Women in Society (Paperback) (ISBN: 9780802829962) Sayers, Dorothy Leigh Quantity Available: 10
Book Description: William B Eerdmans Publishing Co, United States, 2005. Paperback. Book Condition: New. New edition. 190 x 134 mm. Brand New Book with Free Worldwide Delivery. In her lifetime, Dorothy Sayers practices her feminism by keeping in mind her humanity -- by doing exactly what she wanted to do, whether or not that was ordinarily understood to be bfeminineb She did not devote a great deal of time to talking or writing about feminism, but in the essays included here she did address herself particularly to the subject of the role of women in society.Central to both essays is the authorbs conviction that both men and women are first of all human beings, and must be regarded and treated as essentially much more alike than different. Thus the primary task confronting each one of us is not to be true to our sex, but to our humanity. Are Women Human? Astute and Witty Essays on the Role of Women in Society (ISBN: 0802829961 / 0-8028-2996-1) Sayers, Dorothy Leigh Quantity Available: 3
Book Description: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company November 2005, 2005. Paper Back. Book Condition: New. One could very well call the wit of Dorothy Sayers 'biting,' though the publishers of this edition choose instead the far more elegant (and complimentary) piquant. Indeed, she is 'engagingly provocative' and 'agreeably stimulating' with 'a lively arch charm' (Merriam-Webster), though this reader would hardly wish to find herself opposing Ms. Sayers in debate. Her arguments concerning women are sharp as any battle-ready sword and also (quite often) hilarious in their delivery and execution. One of the first women to graduate from Oxford, Sayers met with the Inklings from time to time and might be best known for her detective stories, plays, and fine translations of Dante. Only three times is she known to have written on the nature and functions of women-in the two essays printed here and in her introduction to Dante's Purgatory. Sayers is far from what most imagine a feminist to be. She is more concerned with a way of life that liberates women as human beings than she is defending their right to do men's work. In short, 'It is ridiculous to take on a man's job just in order to be able to say that 'a woman has done it-yah!' The only decent reason for taking any job is that it is your job and you want to do it.' 69 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 91263 Bookseller & Payment Information | More Books from this Seller | Ask Bookseller a Question |
