Book Description: Henry Holt & Co., New York, 1979. Paperback. Book Condition: Good. The collected poems, complete and unabridged, in a sturdy paperback volume of 607 pages, first Owl Book edition. Since high school more than fifty years ago, I've always been a camerado of this great American poet. Frost lived for two more years after he read a poem at John Kennedy's presidential inauguration, and as fate would have it, both men died the same year. Clean tight copy shows wear with concavity and creases in the spine now reinforced with thick, clear pliable vinyl tape for added protection, but with no danger of pages coming loose. Of fireflies in the garden, Frost wrote: "Here come real stars to fill the upper skies,/ And here on earth come emulating flies/ That, though they never equal stars in size/ And they were never really stars at heart,/ Achieve at times a very starlike start./ Only, of course, they can't sustain the part." Frost is playful, fun to read, and often edifying. We kids knew fireflies as "lightning-bugs," a poetic designation nowhere near as good as the term "fireflies" -- and now Frost has gone us all one better with his implicit designation of "star-flies" -- which may take some getting used to but deserves to catch on as being more "poetic" than any of the previous names for this most wonderful of mystifying insects.
