This beautifully designed book chronicles the 13-acres International Design Competition held in Surrey, BC in 2001. The competition challenged designers to explore the schoolyard as a site for ecological rejuvenation, expression and education. Over 250 teams submitted designs for two sites, one wet and one dry. This work also discusses underlying issues in landscape architecture. The jury included Irene Cinq-Mars, Gina Crandell, Mark Dudek, Mark Francis, Lorna Fraser, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, Peter Latz, Francisco Molina, and Umur Olcay. First prize was awarded to Nicholas Gilsoul, while 2nd place went to Claudia Illanes Barrera (with Andrew Harris Diez and Loles Herrero) and the 3rd prize winner was Kamni Gill. Honorable Mentions went to Peter O'Shea (with Sara Wilson), Joel Agacki and Michael Striegel, Barbara Le Strat, Franck Jarosz, Dave Hutch and Jean Kindratsky, Robert Dorgan, and Gabriela & Philippe Luc Barman. Susan Herrington is an associate professor of landscape architecture and environmental design at the Univ. of British Columbia. She received her MLA from Harvard and her BLA from the SUNY. Her research concerns the history and theory of designed landscapes and the culture of childhood. Susan has conducted research concerning kindergarten gardens in Germany with support from the German Academic Exchange, in Boston through a visiting research position at Harvard University, and in Toronto through SSHRC. She has lectured throughout the United States and in Europe. She orchestrated the 13-acres international design competition. In 2003 she began a five-year study called Outside Criteria, which studies the outdoor play spaces of childcare centres in Vancouver as part of the MCRI funded CHILD project. She was also awarded a UBC TLEF with Rick Kopak of UBC's Library and Information Science for Claude Glass: Creating A Digital Library.
