One of the more unusual (not to say downright odd) books ever published about a dead movie star -- in this case, the talented German Shepherd who starred in a half-dozen silent feature films between 1921 and 1927. Imported, appropriately, from Germany, this exceptional pooch (whose original name was Etzel von Oeringen) was discovered and trained by Laurence Trimble and his wife, screenwriter Jane Murfin. Tragically (and imported, appropriately, from Germany),Tragically, however, he died in 1929 and thus never made a sound film -- no doubt thwarting some erstwhile publicist who was probably looking forward to promoting his appearance in a "barkie," and incidentally ceding the hero-dog-of-the-screen mantle to his chief rival, Rin Tin Tin.
