Social work is an exciting field full of demands and rewards. This book allows readers to look at many aspects of social work practice. The satisfaction of working in a profession that helps others is discussed alongside the difficulties social workers face. Discussion of the differences between social work and the other helping professions helps readers identify where their interests lie. The authors present the basic concepts, elements, and theories of social work and use this foundation to take a closer look at various fields of practice, diverse population groups, and social work environments. Attention is given to social work in the criminal justice system, international social work, and social work in rural and poverty-stricken communities. Social Work: Issues and Opportunities in a Challenging Profession makes social work real and relevant to anyone entering the field.

From the Back Cover:
A comprehensive look at the profession of social work, including the rewarding aspects of social work practice as well as the struggles and problems faced by social workers as they do their jobs and uphold the values and ethics of the profession. The book uses case vignettes, boxed illustrations on issues of current importance to the profession, questions, and other pedagogical devices to bring the practice of social work to life. Controversial issues are also presented, such as whether the profession is moving away from social goals of political advocacy and reducing poverty, and toward an emphasis on psychotherapy and private practice. Women's issues and ethnic concerns are addressed in depth, as well as the history of the profession, practice methods, and fields of practice. The text also addresses issues faced by human service professionals and the interrelationships among social workers and other human service professionals. For professionals working in the field of social work.
