About this title:
Synopsis:
Presenting current research in an innovative format, Aging: Concepts and Controversies encourages students to become involved and take an informed stand on the major aging issues that we face as a society. Leading author and active expert in gerontology Rick Moody provides thorough explanation of the issues in the Concepts sections and current research in the Controversy sections, demonstrating the close link between concepts and controversies in these broad areas of aging: health care, socioeconomic trends, and the life course.

About the Author:

Harry R. Moody is a graduate of Yale University and received his PhD in philosophy from Columbia University. He has taught philosophy at Columbia University, Hunter College, New York University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz. For 25 years he was at the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging and Longevity at Hunter College of the City University of New York, where he served as cofounder and Executive Director. With the National Council on Aging in Washington, DC, he served as Codirector of its National Policy Center. He is the author of more than 100 scholarly articles and several books: Abundance of Life: Human Development Policies for an Aging Society (1988), Ethics in an Aging Society (1992), and most recently The Five Stages of the Soul (1997), a study of spiritual growth in the second half of life. He is known for his work in older adult education and served as Chairman of the Board of Elderhostel. He has also been active in the field of biomedical ethics and edits the newsletter The Soul of Bioethics. Dr. Moody recently retired as the Director of Academic Affairs for AARP in Washington, DC. He also serves as Senior Fellow of Civic Ventures.

Jennifer R. Sasser is Chairperson and Associate Professor in the Department of Human Sciences, and coordinates the gerontology program, at Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon. She joined the Marylhurst faculty in 1997 and since that time has been involved in the design and implementation of many on-campus and Web-based courses and programs for adult learners, including the graduate and undergraduate certificate programs in gerontology. As an undergraduate she attended Willamette University, in Salem, Oregon, graduating cum laude in psychology and music; her interdisciplinary graduate studies at University of Oregon and Oregon State University focused on the human sciences, with specialization areas in adult development and aging, women’s studies, and critical social theory and alternative research methodologies. While conducting her doctoral work at OSU she was a graduate teaching and research fellow, as well as the first recipient of the AARP/Andrus Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Gerontology. Her doctoral dissertation became part of a book published by Routledge in 1996 and coauthored with Dr. Janet Lee, titled Blood Stories: Menarche and the Politics of the Female Body in Contemporary US Society. Over the past 20 years Jennifer has been involved in inquiry in the areas of creativity in later life; older women’s embodiment; critical gerontological theory; and transformational adult learning practices. Jennifer served on the Oregon Gerontological Association Board of Directors starting in 2005 and was President of the Board for three years. She is a 2012 recipient of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education Distinguished Teacher award.
