Sachs, since 1978 a counselor and a probation officer at a Chicago juvenile detention center, first describes the history and evolution of street gangs. He explains the allure of gangs, detailing what causes kids to join and what might cause them to leave (if they can). Most important, using copious illustrations, Sachs describes "identifiers"?symbols, jewelry, graffiti, and specific styles of clothing. He details gang language, including a glossary of terms, and describes (with illustrations) hand signs.
