About the Author:
Hiawyn Oram has been writing children's books for more than 20 years, with more than 60 books published to date, including picture books, poetry, plays, young fiction, story collections, and the book and lyrics for two musicals. Hiawyn has also wriiten for children's television. She has been the recepient of many prizes and awards for her work, including being shortlisted for the UK Smarties Prize for her book, The Second Princess. She has recently published new Narnia picture books. Tony Ross was born in London in 1938. He has worked as an art director at an advertising agency, a graphic designer, a cartoonist, a teacher, a film maker and as a Senior Lecturer in Art at Manchester Polytechnic.

But Gray Wolf won't eat her, and Brown Bear won't marry her. The greedy palace cook, however, in exchange for all the Queen's jewels, promises to help. While the Second Princess is rifling through her mother's jewel boxes, she is discovered and marched off to the throne room for an explanation, which she is too ashamed to give. The kindly Queen soon discovers her younger daughter's secret desire, and proclaims that the princesses will alternate days of being first throughout the week, and on Sundays the whole family will be first together, a gentle balm to the pangs of sibling rivalry. The writing is easy and expressive, with a vivid vocabulary and a rhythmic swing, excellent qualities for reading aloud.
