Grade 3-5-Slim volumes that attempt to cover vast amounts of material with a minimum of text; some interesting photographs of artifacts; and broad, colorful drawings. Interspersed throughout are small boxes in which the "history detective" either elaborates on a point or asks a question based on the illustrations. A timeline in each title is followed by a substantial glossary and an index. Of the two books, Vikings is better, primarily because its scope is more contained. New World tries to cover the Caribbean Indians, the Aztecs, and the Incas, as well as the explorers who encountered them, in 22 pages. While there is nothing terribly wrong with these books, neither is there anything sufficiently right about them to merit purchase. There are better titles available that meet the needs of researchers and interested readers.
