Description:

1st Printing. Signed. 233 pages. Published in 2014. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in the United Kingdom in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. Although the book has since been translated into several languages, there is no American Edition. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Sarah Perry's "After Me Comes The Flood". Her hauntingly beautiful debut. The title is the trans-literation of the famous French doomsday pronouncement, "Apres moi, le deluge", reportedly first uttered by King Louis XV (or as others say, his legendary mistress, Madame de Pompadour). "One hot summer's day, John Cole decides to leave his life behind. He shuts up the bookshop no one ever comes to and drives out of London. When his car breaks down and he becomes lost on an isolated road, he goes looking for help and stumbles into the grounds of a grand but dilapidated house. Its residents welcome him with open arms. But there's more to this strange community than meets the eye. They all know him by name, they've prepared a room for him, and claim to have been waiting for him all along. Who are these people and what do they intend for John? Gently sinister and psychologically complex, a haunting and hypnotic debut novel by a brilliant new voice" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Sarah Perry collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated (in the month and year of publication), and inscribed ("lined") in black pen on the title page by the author: "Sarah Perry 'Is that an owl/It's the wind' 8th July 2014". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, dated, and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Shiva Naipaul Prize for her travel writing. One of the most brilliant new voices in contemporary literature. A fine copy. ISBN 1846689457. Synopsis: Winner of the East Anglian Book of the Year award 2014 Longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award 2014 One hot summer's day, John Cole decides to leave his life behind. He shuts up the bookshop no one ever comes to and drives out of London. When his car breaks down and he becomes lost on an isolated road, he goes looking for help, and stumbles into the grounds of a grand but dilapidated house. Its residents welcome him with open arms - but there's more to this strange community than meets the eye. They all know him by name, they've prepared a room for him, and claim to have been waiting for him all along. As nights and days pass John finds himself drawn into a baffling menagerie. There is Hester, their matriarchal, controlling host; Alex and Claire, siblings full of child-like wonder and delusions; the mercurial Eve; Elijah - a faithless former preacher haunted by the Bible; and chain-smoking Walker, wreathed in smoke and hostility. Who are these people? And what do they intend for John? Elegant, gently sinister and psychologically complex, After Me Comes The Flood is a haunting and hypnotic debut novel by a brilliant new voice.

About the Author: Sarah Perry was born in Essex in 1979, and grew up in a deeply religious home. She has been writer in residence at the Gladstone Library and is the winner of a Shiva Naipaul award for travel writing. She lives in Norwich. Her debut novel, After Me Comes the Flood, won the East Anglian Book of the Year Award 2014
