xlv and 170 p. This is No. 46 in the Lakeside Classic series, which began in 1903. R.R. Donnelley published a reprint of a classic historical work each year, in a fine edition. The books were given as gifts to Donnelley employees and have never been available for sale except in the secondary market. In good condition, they are highly prized and a set of several them is a beautiful addition to a library. Each book contains a Publisher's Preface that gives background on the selection and publication of the book and on the status of the company, established in 1864 and now the world's largest commercial publisher. The noted historian Milo Quaife wrote historical introductions, footnotes, indexes, etc., for many of the classics. The California Gold Rush reached its height in 1849, and this book, first published in 1895 in installments, is Shaw's account of the planning and execution of his trek from Boston to the West through unsettled and unknown country and the difficulties encountered on the way and in the new El Dorado. Dark red hard cover, gilt titles, top edges gilt, map, fine portrait of Shaw and other illustrations, with tissue covers protecting plates; notes; index, all fine. Original cellophane dust cover is missing pieces on the spine and is very fragile. Bookseller Inventory # LC46RS

We concentrate on nonfiction, particularly history, and in books of a local or regional nature--city, county, state histories, for instance, and histories of movements, institutions, churches, organizations, and people particular to those places. We have family histories, historical or regional fiction, children's books, cook books, and interesting books on the arts, antiques, and useful crafts.
