Great for any Travel/History Fan or Collector. Highly Collectible; Great Gift Idea!!! FOLLOWING STATES: Title leaf is 2nd state (a cancel with “1884” copyright date and not conjugate with the first leaf of the illustrations list). Page [13] of the illustrations list lists “Him and another Man” for p87. Page 57, 11th line from bottom has “ with the saw ” (2nd state). Page number “155” is 3rd state (the final “5” is slightly larger, thus extending lower down than the other 2 digits). Page 143 is in the 2nd state of page 143’s 3 states: In the illustration’s caption, “COL.” has “L.” in perfect type, but the “b” at the beginning of the 7th line of text is in perfect type. Page 161 is 1st state (without the signing “11”). Page 283’s illustration is 3rd state (fly line on Silas Phelps’s pants is redone). Leaf [23][8] is 2nd state (a blank leaf following page 366, not pasted under the rear endpaper). Aside from the textual points listed above, BAL 3415 differentiates 3 states of the heliotype frontis. This is state 3 of the heliotype frontis of the bust: The tablecloth is not visible, “Karl Gerhardt Sc.” appears on the bust, and the lower margin of the heliotype frontis has “Photo-Gravure Co. N.Y.” ATTRIBUTES: A Charming, sleek Original dark green Cloth Cover design with pretty Gold/Black Labeling/Pictorials to front/binding, with a Great Frontispiece and Bust of Twain, and over 170 other Brilliant Illustrations throughout, and a Legendary Classic from the Famous Author!!! SUMMARY: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel by Mark Twain, first published in England in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written in the vernacular, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective). It is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Satirizing a Southern antebellum society that had ceased to exist about twenty years before the work was published, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an often scathing look at entrenched attitudes, particularly racism. BACKGROUND: Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain was popular, and his wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers. Upon his death he was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature". CONDITION: Condition is Good+/Very Good. Some wear to edges, repair to ding at top front board edge, few small faint white marks to front, little glue/color added to top/bottom of spine/corners, few small erased numbers to first end page, small slice at top of the same, blemishing to bust plate/little to frontispiece, small blemish here and there, few pages in the middle stick out a tiny bit but secure, most pages/hinges/text block are very good for 130 years old!!!. Book Description: Charles L. Webster and Co., 1884. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN Mark Twain; 1884/1885; First Edition, Early Issue; Charles L. Webster; Illustrated by E. W. Kemble; 366 Pages; 6.9"x 8.9"; Extremely Rare!!! Great for any Travel/History Fan or Collector. Highly Collectible; Great Gift Idea!!! first American edition, third or later issue, with copyright date of 1884 on the verso of the title, photogravure frontispiece of bust by Karl Gerhardt, illustrations by E.W.Kemble, original blue cloth , gilt, rebacked preserving original backstrip, tape markings to covers, rubbed and worn, new endpapers, [cf. BAL 3415], 8vo , New York, 1885. By far the scarcest of the cloth variants. The book exhibits the following states: Title leaf is a cancel with copyright notice dated 1884 (second state, but the first state was only seen in a prospectus and set of advance sheets - no copies of the first state have been observed in the published edition); heading for chapter 6 reads "Huck Decided" instead of "Huck Decides"; the illustration captioned "Him and another man" is listed on page 88; "with the was" on p. 57; final 5 p. 155 lacking; signature mark 11 missing on p. 161; final leaf is blank; frontispiece portrait table cloth not visible, Karl Gerhardt on side, and Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; pg. 283 corrected pant fly. Other points are disputed as printings were bound haphazardly. Subscribers who had already purchased Tom Sawyer, and wanted a binding to match, were invited to request a blue cloth binding on Huck instead of the publisher’s green. This is one of those blue bindings—20 times rarer than the green. ATTRIBUTES: A Charming, sleek and Rare Blue Cloth Cover design to Match "Tom Sawyer" as opposed to the more common Green Cloth, with pretty Gold/Black Labeling/Pictorials to front/binding, with a Great Frontispiece Bust of Twain, and over 170 other Brilliant Illustrations and a Legendary Classic Read!!!
