Henri de Sponde (1568-1643) was a French clergyman, lawyer, ecclesiastical historian and editor successor to Caesar Baronius' work. He came from a family close to the French royal court, was a godson to the future King of France, Henry IV. Formerly a Calvinist, he was converted and ordained a priest in 1606 and was named the Bishop of Pamiers in 1626. For twenty years he attempted to carry out the decrees of the Council of Trent in this center of clashes between Protestants and Catholics along the border between France and Spain. These volumes are a continuation of Caesar Baronius' Annales Ecclesiastici . undertaken by Henri de Sponde during the last two decades of his life. It was written to counter the anti-Catholic history of the Protestants. A very good clean copy of this important early study of church history. Bookseller Inventory # 14040
