Autograph signed letter, front and back, on Van Wyck Brooks stationary (4 1/2 x 7 inch) with envelope (4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch) dated April 15, 1959. Van Wyck Brooks (1886-1963) was an American literary critic and biographer during the first half of the 20th century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his book THE FLOWERING OF NEW ENGLAND, 1815-1865 (1936). The letter is a response to Robert Young Jr. (1927- ) in which Brooks declines to read a manuscript sent by Young as his policy, regretfully, is to read only his manuscripts as he has a great deal of reading to do for his work. Young's manuscript is a biography of theater critic William Winter (1836-1917). Fine clean copy with evidence of a fold in the letter, also included is the envelope with canceled stamp.
