Circa 1840-1850. Original chapbook, once bound, with a portrait of a queen on the front, no. 75 under the publisher's information. One sheet of paper folded to make 8 pages, unopened. 3 3/4 x 6 inches. Chapbooks were an early form of popular literature, originating in the 16th century and fading out of use by the mid-19th century. They were cheaply printed booklets that "chapmen" would sell door to door or at fairs to the common people. This one contains two ballads, the first about the Battle of Otterbourne, a border skirmish between the English and British that occurred in 1388. Seller Inventory # 016245
